If you’ve never hired a motorhome or campervan before, it can be difficult to know what to look out for. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of 5 factors to consider when hiring a motorhome, so that you choose a reputable motorhome hire company and not only get the very best deal, but also the most suitable vehicle for your circumstances.
Here are our top 5 factors to consider when hiring a motorhome:
1. Online reviews
First and foremost, before you make contact with any motorhome for hire companies, check all their reviews online. If the motorhome hire company you’re considering doesn’t have any online reviews, ask yourself why?
The easiest way to find a motorhome hire business in your local area is to head to Google and conduct an appropriate search. For example, if you live in Cambridge, a suitable search term would be ‘motorhome hire Cambridge’.
You’ll get pages of search results and what you’ll notice is that there are a number of businesses listed right at the very top (ours being one of them in this case).
Click on the business you would like to find out more about and you’ll be presented with that company’s online reviews.
Now be sure to read all the reviews, paying particular attention to the negative ones. The important aspect to consider here is how the business has responded to any less than flattering reviews. It tells you a great deal about how the business is run and how much pride it takes in its reputation.
The bottom line is every good motorhome for hire business is going to have garnered some online reviews. Most get them naturally simply by doing a great job and providing an excellent service.
2. The size and layout of the motorhome
Once you’ve shortlisted a few motorhome hire companies, the next step is to decide which of their vehicles is going to be most suitable for your needs.
Luckily, most motorhome hire companies feature the layouts and sizes of their vehicles on their website. This allows you to quickly and easily see which type of motorhome is going to be best for you.
The image above is taken from our own website – New Marque Motorhomes. As you can see, it shows both an external picture of the motorhome and a handy layout diagram (which can be enlarged by clicking). This allows you to immediately understand how the motorhome is configured inside and decide if it’s going to be suitable for you.
- Will you have children with you? If so, will they want to share a bed? Probably not if they’re teenagers, so opt for bunk beds
- Will you have pets with you? Where will they sleep?
- Do you want a fixed bed, or are you happy to put a sofa bed away each morning?
Alternatively, if the motorhome hire company you’re considering doesn’t have vehicle layouts on its website, pick up the phone, give them a call and have a chat. Any good business should be willing to listen to your needs and suggest vehicles in their fleet that are suitable for you. If one won’t, then look elsewhere.
3. What extras are included?
Another important aspect to consider is what extras are included with the hire of the motorhome. After all, there’s nothing worse than collecting the vehicle and finding out many items you assumed would be included actually aren’t.
For example, does the motorhome hire company supply utensils, cutlery, pots, pans, a kettle, etc? While purchasing such items yourself isn’t going to cost a fortune, it is another expense, plus you’ll have the hassle of having to do so last minute.
What about bedding? An outside table and chairs? If both are optional extras, find out how much they will add to your overall bill. You may find that buying such items yourself actually works out cheaper, plus they’ll be yours to own!
One of the most important items to consider when hiring a motorhome is an awning. Now many motorhomes you hire won’t come with an awning attached as standard. That’s because of the potential damage that can be caused in windy situations.
However, many motorhome hire companies (like us) will provide a pop-up gazebo for you to use throughout your booking. These are worth their weight in gold. That’s because the reflection of the sun on a big, white motorhome during the day can be a real nuisance. Plus, pop-up gazebos are ridiculously easy to assemble.
Again, see how much the motorhome hire company will charge for such a gazebo. Any more than £40 and you might be better off sourcing your own.
4. Book ahead of time
There’s nothing more disappointing than planning an exciting adventure in a motorhome, only to find that the vehicle you want isn’t available when you want it. That’s why we always advise our customers to book ahead of time to avoid disappointment. And there really is no excuse when you can quickly and easily enquire online, any time.
Booking ahead of time also applies to the destinations you are looking to stay at throughout your trip. Campsites and caravan parks get booked up pretty quickly, so secure your slots well ahead of time. It will not only save you lots of stress when you’re on your adventure, but you could get better deals too.
5. Be prepared for your first night
You’ve picked up your motorhome and are raring to hit the road. Chances are you’ll drive for a few hours that day and probably won’t reach your first destination until the evening. You’ll be hungry, tired and in a place that you perhaps don’t really know all that well. That’s why you want to be prepared and have food, water and everything else ready before you arrive at your first destination.
It’s such a simple aspect to consider, but one that can really make a difference and start your motorhome holiday as you mean to go on. A bad first night can put a real downer on your trip. Be prepared and you won’t be disappointed.
